Resource Histograms for Workforce Planning

The resource histogram is the primary tool for workforce planning in construction. It shows the number of workers (or equipment units, or material quantities) needed in each time period, typically displayed as vertical bars on a timeline. Float Master generates these histograms for any resource or group of resources in your schedule, allowing you to see the planned workforce profile for electricians, pipefitters, concrete crews, crane operators, or any other resource category.

When the histogram shows resource demand exceeding available capacity, Float Master highlights the over-allocation in red. This visual flag immediately identifies periods where the schedule requires more resources than are available — a situation that will either cause delays (if resources cannot be obtained) or require overtime and premium costs (if additional resources are brought in). By identifying these conflicts early, project teams can adjust the schedule, stagger activities, or arrange for additional resources before the conflict becomes a crisis.

Cumulative Resource S-Curves

While histograms show period-by-period demand, the resource S-Curve shows cumulative resource consumption over time. This cumulative view is particularly useful for tracking total labor hours expended versus planned, identifying whether the project is consuming resources faster or slower than expected. A resource S-Curve that runs above the planned curve indicates the project is using more resources than planned — potentially due to rework, inefficiency, or scope growth. A curve running below plan might indicate delayed mobilization or resource shortages.

Float Master plots both planned and actual resource S-Curves when actual data is available, providing the same planned-vs-actual comparison for resources that cost S-Curves provide for dollars. The area between these two profiles represents the range of possible resource demands, giving planners a realistic bandwidth for workforce planning rather than a single deterministic number.

This envelope analysis is particularly valuable during the planning phase when the schedule has significant float and many activities could be shifted to smooth resource peaks. By visualizing the envelope, schedulers can identify opportunities to move non-critical activities within their float windows to reduce peak resource demands — a process known as resource leveling.
